Helloooo I’m Sofia and this is my tale

Some 20 years worth of poems and ponytails

The Sofia –>

Five young girls stand together on a grassy soccer field, each holding a soccer ball and wearing sports clothes. They are smiling and posing for the photo, with a goalpost in the background.

Piedmont, California was my childhood home

I lived there quite happily until I was grown

I read books and played Soccer, Explore, and Pretend

With stuffed animals and my sister, my built-in best friend

I attended Havens Elementary, where I loved to learn

I wanted to write books, for more stories I yearned

.

Soccer camp! I’m in the middle and the blondie to my left is my twin seester –>

Four young people stand outside a cabin in a wooded area, wearing colorful, handmade outfits and paper signs. One sign reads YOU CAN TRUST ME!. They pose playfully, making silly faces towards the camera.

Then at age nine a magical land I found

Of Wish, Wonder, Surprise, I soon became spellbound

My very first summer at Camp Augusta commenced

I spent my first week in Manzi 2 and from thence

I learned of a magic, made of Pirates and Trees

Of Archery and Capture the Flag, and Campfire Stories

I was one happy camper for seven lovely years

As I learned a few skills and I mastered a few fears

And the Counselors of Augusta, I always admired

Never dreaming that one day I’d also be hired!

Photos! Top left: My Oakie cabin from 2011. Top right: Beware, my friends, because that face is the last thing you will see before you are splattered with oatmeal this summer! Bottom: Here you can see the effects of a strange phenomenon that sometimes happens when you spend excessive time at camp and you slowly begin to turn into a little piece of camp yourself!

A group of eight people stands on a grassy, rocky hill in front of a large white windmill with a stone base and black blades under a cloudy sky.

My summers were lovely, round the campfire together

But in the rest of my life, I longed for adventure!

And so in September of the year I turned sixteen

I became an exchange student, in the country of Spain!

I moved to a town near the city of Madrid

With a Spanish host family for a year I did live

And in Spain I learned to let go of my attachments

Instead see the world full of possibility and enchantment

I also learned Spanish, and saw the futbol player Cristiano

I even spent one week hiking the Camino de Santiago

¡Fotos!   Top: for those Quixote fans – my two families among the windmills of La-Mancha!    Bottom: Left – I went to a public high school in Toledo, a veerry old city full of funny shops celebrating Spanish history. Right – The best week of the year was walking 100km of the Camino de Santiago. We never got lost because we knew we could follow the happy yellow arrows leading us straight to Santiago.

Three girls with painted faces and arms are standing outdoors by trees, with two of them tied to the trees with colorful ropes. A wooden cabin and forest are visible in the background. Sunlight shines through the scene.

.When I came home from Spain I also returned

To my other home, Augusta, on a new journey to learn

The arts of communication, compassion, and play

Through the Camp Augusta CIRCLE program, I found my own way

I LOVED hanging with kids, so for the following two years

I returned as a Junior Counselor, and I am absolutely sincere

When I say that I love to be silly and sing songs

Live in Manzi Village, and tie-dye all day long

Last year I survived a terrible kidnapping by my own cabin!

I’ve got my guard up now, though – don’t think you can kidnap me again this summer cuz I’m keeping my eyes peeled!

Five people sit smiling on a stone sign reading University of Puget Sound, surrounded by colorful flowers and green trees on a partly cloudy day.

Now I’m in college and it’s harder than it looks

Lotsa typin’ up essays and pouring over textbooks

I’m majoring in English – ’tis what I was destined to do

Though my plans for the future are unknown hitherto

Perhaps I’ll be a poet, like Shel Silverstein

Or maybe a ski instructor, or something else unforeseen

A person in a tie-dye shirt stands in front of a wall with green tape shaped like antlers above their head, creating a playful effect; a Buddha painting and string lights are visible on the wall.

.

More about me, so you’ll get the idea

A short list of things that make up Sofia

My favorites are reading, skiing and hiking

Mountain lakes and pancakes are also to my liking

I can juggle a soccer ball 380 times

Sometimes I write poetry, I’m all bout those rhymes!

I have quite a loud voice and I use it for singing

Camp songs and Disney songs and everything inbetween

This summer is my second as a full staff member

And I can’t wait for all the stories I’ll be telling in September!
