Hellllllo Camp Augusta!

My name is Sarah and I am the Wilderness Director for summer 2023. I am so stoked to be spending another year exploring the great outdoors with y’all. While this is my third year with Camp Augusta Wilderness, I have also spent quite a few sessions counseling in Manzi (where you may recognize me from) and was even a camper myself wayyyyy back in the day!

A person in a red jacket kayaks on a calm lake surrounded by forested hills and snow-capped mountains under a clear blue sky.
A person wearing a red ski jacket with a white cross, yellow gloves, and ski goggles smiles and flashes double peace signs while standing in a snowy, mountainous outdoor setting.
Three people wearing winter gear hike uphill on a snowy slope under a clear blue sky, using poles and following tracks in the fresh snow.

I am (almost) 24 years young, and have dedicated the last several years to studying/ working in wilderness medicine. I am a professional ski patrol, wilderness EMT, avalanche mitigator, snow science enthusiast, and search and rescue team member. In fact, I spend at least 100 days every year on skis, a mixture of in bounds and backcountry. I love being able to combine my passion for healthcare with my desire to be outdoors!

A person in a red jacket, helmet, and sunglasses stands on a snowy glacier holding an ice axe, with blue ice formations and ridges in the background under a bright sky.
A smiling hiker stands knee-deep in muddy water, holding their shoes in one hand and giving a thumbs-up. They wear a blue jacket, khaki pants, and a large backpack with a yellow rain cover, surrounded by trees and grass.
Green aurora borealis lights streak across a dark night sky, partially framed by the silhouettes of trees at the bottom of the image.
A person wearing a helmet climbs a rocky cliff near the ocean, surrounded by trees and rugged rocks. Climbing ropes are visible, and the water and distant shore are in the background under a blue sky.

Last fall, I moved to Southeast Alaska to study outdoor recreation and work on developing some of my hard skills. I got to climb a bunch, do some glacier travel, mountaineer, see the northern lights and explore the Tongass National Forest. It was a life-changing three months!!

After a record breaking winter in the Sierra Nevada, I am extremely excited to enjoy a sunny summer filled with climbing, backpacking, hiking and rafting. See you all soon! Yay wilderness!! <3 Sarah
