Rachel

Hello!

I’m Rachel! My friends and family also call me Rach – so you can call me Rach too!

I am nineteen years old currently, but by the time you see me I may be twenty. My Birthday is in July during camp season!!! I’m so excited!

This will be my first year at Camp Augusta and I couldn’t be more excited to meet all of you!

Education and What Lies Ahead

I am currently studying Neuroscience and Psychology at Ohio Wesleyan University. I am very passionate about the human brain. No… not the “gross parts” (don’t worry I’m not a zombie); I enjoy learning about mental processes and why we think and behave the way we do. I am also a big advocate for mental health, specifically mental health resources for children.

After Undergraduate school, I plan on going to Graduate school and pursuing a master’s and doctorate in psychology. I hope that all of those long years of schooling will pay off and I will end up in a career where I can help children and aid in improving their mental health.

My Favorite Hobbies/Activities/Sport

My favorite sport to play is volleyball. I play at the division three level at Ohio Wesleyan University. I have been playing since I was eleven years old. Before volleyball, I actually played: soccer for nine years, dance for one, and did gymnastics for three years. Out of all of those sports volleyball definitely is my favorite… even though it gave me a pretty gnarly injury that took me out of my freshman year of college. I wouldn’t trade it for the world. I love how free I feel when I compete and I have met my life-long friend through volleyball.

On campus I am also involved in Greek Life. I am a member of Delta Delta Delta (tridelta), my sorority. Through tridelta, I have been able to meet my sisters for life and become so much more involved on campus. I am apart of the diversity, equity, and inclusion committee for my chapter and I am the Vice President of DEI for the Panhellenic Council. It brings me great joy to be a leader in the Greek life community on campus, I love being a part of something bigger than myself.  Aside from the serious stuff, we love having different fun events. We have events like: synchronized swimming contests, carnival day, dodgeball, movie nights and more! The best part is that the proceeds go to our philanthropy (mine is St.Jude’s) and we are able to give back.

Additionally, volunteering is something that I love dedicating my time to. My volleyball  team and I volunteer at this store called “Common Ground Store”. It is a store that gives household and hygiene items , and food to families in need. It is a non-profit organization that believes that when you step into that store that everyone should be treated as if they are on “common ground”- no one is better than another person. When I am there, I like to check people out and see their smiling faces as they walk out of the store with all of the items they desire.

I also like to travel with my friends and family. Last summer, I went to Brunswick, Georgia with my best friend. We tried paddle boarding for the first time. It took me a while to get the hang of it but it was honestly one of the best activities I had ever done.  I like to be adventurous and try new things. Sometimes I may shy away from something at first but once I get the hang of it I thrive off of learning new skills and activities.

My, Why?

I believe that it is important to have a reason why you do what you do. Otherwise, what is the point?! My ‘Why’ for being a counselor at Camp Augusta is because of the passion behind the values of camp and the desire to ignite awe, innocence, and wonder in our campers. I love being around children for those reasons, and the fact that Camp Augusta seeks to foster an environment that is both magical, fun, and provides the capacity for growth, pulled me right in. I want to be at a camp that allows me to not only interact with and mentor children everyday, but a camp that makes my inner child ignite inside as well.

I LOVE KIDDOS! 🙂

I am also currently a part of a program called ‘Big Brothers Big Sisters’ where I mentor a ten years old girl. I am considered her big and she is my little. We hang out once a week (sometimes more) and work on activities that are playful and fun, but also give her the tools to grow and become the best version of herself! We have a connection like no other and that is one of the reasons I want to come to camp; to make a connection with all of you!

I hope that this summer all of you that I get the pleasure of meeting and bonding with will leave camp knowing that you have met someone who will be your biggest cheerleader who has your best interest at heart. I hope during your time with me we are able to push the bounds of your imagination and boost your confidence that you can do anything your heart desires if you believe you can. I want you to feel like your best version of yourself during and after this experience and feel like no mountain is too tall for you to conquer! We will go through this journey together and I couldn’t be more excited!

Fun Facts About Me:

  • I LOVEEEEEE baked beans!!! They are my favorite food. (Don’t judge lol)
  • I had one of the hardest injuries to come back from last year. I tore my Achilles (ouch).
  • I was less than two pounds when I was born. I kind of looked like a newborn chicken.
  • The Hunger Games is my favorite movie.
  • I am obsessed with anything that is pink.
  • I have lived in Georgia, Florida, New Jersey, and Ohio

What I look forward to the most at camp are the evening embers. I can’t wait to get time to bond with my campers on a deeper level 🙂

Psssst… When you come to camp ask me about a game called ‘my train’! I’ll be happy to play with you!

CANNOT WAIT TO SEE ALL OF YOUR BEAUTIFUL FACES THIS SUMMER!!!
