Ieuan

Hello there!

My name is Ieuan Osborn, I will be counselling in Pine for my 2nd year and I’m super excited to be returning to Camp Augusta and Pine for the summer.

If you’re struggling with the pronunciation of my name, you are not alone. I have grown up with all kinds of different ways in how to pronounce it.

The trick is, take the ‘Y’ from yes, the ‘IE’ from lie and then stick an ‘UN’ on the end. There you have it Ieuan (y-ie-un)! Most of my friends call me by the first syllable and I am more than happy for you to do the same!

I live in a little town of under 10,000 people, called Bradford-on-Avon, in the bright green countryside of west Wiltshire, in the South West of England. The weather is usually fairly cloudy with lots of rain and wind, so spending the summer in California is like living in a desert for me! One of the main intentions for going to camp in the first place was that my town is a very safe, quiet place and camp offered me something challenging and new. I found a desire for growth, fun and connection during my first year, which is why I’ll be returning this year. Also, where else do you get to play every day and meet awesome people?

I turned 20 this year and will be heading off to University in September to study History at Swansea Uni. What I love about History is that it makes you think and challenges your views on humanity. In studying the subject it allows you to analyse the decision making process of many powerful figures throughout history and the effects of the actions taken.

Currently, I am taking an Access to Higher Education course in Bath, near my hometown. It is essentially re-doing my last two years of school in 10 months and I am studying Psychology, History and English Literature. It is intense, requires a lot of commitment, and is very worthwhile for what I want to achieve.

Looking into the future, I am interested in potentially doing a post-grad in teaching, as that would be a profession I would happily pursue and find a lot of joy in.

This will be my fourth time in America! I spent a week in NYC back in 2013. I saw the sights and experienced my parents getting married surrounded by only: me, my brother and three other family friends in Brooklyn.

The next venture to the States was a 3 week round trip from Denver up to Montana then back down through Yellowstone in 2015. It was an other worldly experience that I won’t be forgetting soon, and I saw some beautiful sights in the relative peace and comfort of my family. However, for me this was not enough; I saw what natural beauty some of America had to offer, but I hadn’t felt I had met enough people along the way.

What I love about the States is the sheer size and diversity that the country is built upon. So many cultures, landscapes and stories spread across 6 time zones!

I’m really excited to return into a community filled with music! I have played piano since I was 5, saxophone since I was 11 and self-taught myself guitar from 15. Music is a great passion of mine and you’ll most likely see me around camp with a guitar in my hands.

Spending time in the trees and climbing at Augusta is something I haven’t stopped thinking about. I broke my collar bone back in November which took my out of my usual hobby of rugby. It was a difficult time to go through as rugby is a place I find a lot of support and excitement. But, as soon as my bone was mostly fixed I decided to chase up my love of climbing, while the rest of it got fully healed. It challenges your whole body and gives you an awesome sense of independence.

“So Ieuan, why are you going back to camp?”

“Oh hey, thanks for asking, I’ll tell you”

Camp really helped me grow during my first summer and I can see so many opportunities to grow more this year.

The campers and staff are awesome – apart from Declan the cat.

It hardly rains and England does, a lot.

It’s sunny and England isn’t.

I like climbing trees and jewellery smithing.

Pine Village is amazing.

Non-stop fun and play.

I can play the guitar practically all the time.

Capture the Flag needs to be in the olympics.

No day is the same at Augusta

“Woah, that sounds amazing, no wonder you’re going back.”

All in all, I’m super excited to return to camp this year and connect with campers new and old, as well as experience the wonderful world of Augusta.

In the meantime, stay funky, remember to duck shower and always travel in threes!

Take it easy and see you in the summer!
