Liam

Kia Ora!

A big hearty g’day and hello from New Zealand! My name is Liam Mather and this is my second year as a counselor at Camp Augusta. Last year I had such an incredible time under the pine trees that I couldn’t resist coming back for a second season. For most of last season you would have found me acting crazy and running around Pine village, although this year you can find me in Cedar!

To help you get to know me better I’m going to take you on a tour of some of my favorite spots in New Zealand! I’ll keep this short and sweet because I would rather get to know you in person!

Destination 1 – The Bay of Islands

The Bay of Islands is on the north/east coast of the North Island of NZ. It is a pretty special location, filled with pristine beaches, large forests, and plenty of adventures to be had. It is also where I was lucky enough to grow up! My family have lived here for all my life, and I don’t think they will ever move. My immediate family consists of my Aussie mum (Tina), Kiwi dad (David), and older brother (Sam). We have always been very close, and I really do value the relationships I have with them.

Destination 2 – Dunedin

Dunedin holds a very special place in my heart. It was way down there that I spent three years studying primary/elementary school teaching at the University of Otago. While studying I spent a large amount of time in various schools as a student teacher. I love helping people learn new things and have new experiences, so teaching was a perfect fit! I will eventually return to teaching in New Zealand, but for now I’m enjoying traveling and living the camp life at Augusta.

Destination 3 – Queenstown

Ah, where to begin with Queenstown. This tourist hot spot is home to incredible hikes, pristine ski fields and picturesque views. That’s why Queenstown is home to three of my top pastimes; hiking, skiing, and photography. Hiking is something that I find great comfort in. I find it very calming to hike in the great outdoors, clearing my head with fresh air and great views. I am also a huge fan of skiing. Although I haven’t been able to go the past two years, I still consider it one of my favorite things to do on the planet! One day soon I hope to work a winter season as a ski instructor in Canada or Japan. Nothing however, beats a great day out with good friends. Whether we’re exploring somewhere new, hiking together, relaxing at the beach, or catching up in town, spending quality time with friends will always be my first choice.

There is so much more I could tell you about myself but I’ll save some things for camp. Besides I’d rather get to know you!

All the best and I’ll see you on the wood chips soon.
