Liam

I am 20 years old. This will be my first time being a Camp Counselor at Camp Augusta. I’m not from the USA so this will also be my first time at any American summer camp and I’m really looking forward to it.

I’m from County Cork in Ireland. I went to a Gaelscoil (Irish speaking school) for primary school so I am able to speak Irish.
I joined Bishopstown Scouts when I was 6/7 years old. This is where my love of camping, hiking and the outdoors started. I’m still with the scouts today as a Rover (18-26 years old) and a Scouter.

I am currently studying Engineering in University College Cork.
My hobbies include watching tv shows and movies, reading books, listening to music, playing the piano and running.

I’ve been volunteering with the Beavers (6-8/9 year olds) at Bishopstown Scouts since September/October 2021, I became a Scouter (Scout Leader) 10 days after my 18th birthday on the 22nd of April 2023, so for a short period of time I might have been the youngest Scouter in Ireland. With the scouts I help organize and run weekly meetings, hikes, camps, and other events.

I want to work at Camp Augusta because I feel like there will be a lot of similarities with what I do already with the scouts, but with the added adventure of going to another country for the summer.

I hope to help campers at Camp Augusta have an enjoyable summer, making lots of great memories like I have through my hobbies.

I have competed at the national level in Cross Country in both the Schools and Club races. I wasn’t a sporty kid so it took a few years and a lot of hard work before I got anywhere near competitive. I’ve gone from almost being last in every race, to getting a 5km personal best of 18 minutes 4 seconds. I have many team medals from over the years but sadly I’m yet to finish individually in the top 3 for any significant races.

I completed Dúshlán, a 140km (87 Miles) hike over 7 days in the west of Ireland with only a map and a compass with my friend Diarmaid. It was both a physical
and mental challenge, but I really enjoyed it and I’m proud of myself for completing it. The base camp after the hike was a lot of fun, I spoke with other participants about their eventful journeys.

Lightning round:
● I enjoy drinking tea so much that I have been given nicknames like “Tea Guy” and “Kettle” from my fellow scouts.
● Last Summer I went to Roverway, a big international scout camp held in Norway. I made friends from all over the world that I’m still in contact with today.
● I have the Bronze and Silver Gaisce or Presidents award.
● My favourite sport is Formula 1.
● My favourite video game of all time is and always will be Minecraft.
