Once upon a time, there was a little girl named Maddie who dreamed of being a veterinarian-who-also-owned-a-bakery-and-played-professional-soccer-and-danced-in-the-chorus-of-a-Broadway-play-and-was-a-poet-and-a-violinist-in-her-free-time when she grew up. When she got older, she found out doing all those things hardly left any time to sing silly songs or practice her cartwheels, so she decided to journey to a magical place called Augusta where she could be anything she wanted to be.
Our story begins with Maddie as a wee lass growing up in Pearl City, Hawaii. Her dad was a Naval officer, so she moved every couple years. Her favorite place to live was Hawaii. She loved swimming in the ocean, dancing hula, hiking up the Wai’anae Range, and eating yummy Hawaiian food. When she was five, she started taking violin lessons. She loved music. As she got older, she kept playing violin and also learned piano, ukulele, guitar, and a whole bunch of other instruments. Her older brother and sister, Connor and Brittany, helped her give concerts in the living room for their parents. This became a tradition and now her whole family loves to have jam sessions whenever they get together.
Maddie continued to play the violin through high school. She also picked up a couple of other hobbies along the way like dance and theatre. She taught music lessons and volunteered with a community show choir group. She loved working with the students she taught so much, that she decided she would be a teacher. She practiced her violin really hard and was accepted to Belmont University in Nashville, Tennessee. She spent her time playing in the symphony orchestra, volunteering at a non-profit music school for students from low-income households, and organizing camping trips for students to help clean up and build trails for national parks.
In 2014, she was offered a position as a Manzi counselor at Camp Augusta. She had a magnificently magical summer. She discovered her love of climbing trees, playing with goats, and eating woodchips. There were always lots of people around her who would sing camp songs as loud as they could whenever they got the chance. Her favorite activities to teach were guitar, ukulele, zip-lining, and all the ropes and climbing elements. Evening Programs and campfires always put a smile on her face.
Maddie’s story is far from over. She returns for a second magical summer in 2016 and the sequel promises more adventure, musical madness, giggles, and memories in store. She has recently graduated from Belmont University with a BM degree in k-12 Instrumental Music Education and a minor in Mathematics. She is so excited to see where life will take her in the next few years and she begins her journey of post-grad life (aka adulthood) with a single step onto the woodchips of Augusta…
