Liam Mather

Kia Ora/ Hello Augustans!

My name is Liam Mather and I am a new counselor in Pine Village. I am 21 and this will be my first summer at camp, so I am super excited to immerse myself in camp culture! I hope that in this bio you will learn more about me and my life. I’m not going to tell you everything though, as I would rather tell to you face to face at camp! When we meet, feel free to ask me anything!

Jandals and Sunscreen

I’m from a beautiful area called the Bay of Islands in New Zealand. Nicknamed “the winter-less north” most of my life has been blessed with warm sun and sand. Growing up near the ocean, I have developed a great admiration and respect for water. I enjoy surfing and swimming, and exploring the many hidden wonders around the Bay of Islands!

Backyard Cricket and Barbeques

My family are the awesome! They are very friendly and support me in everything I do. My immediate family consists of my Aussie mum (Tina), Kiwi dad (David), and older brother (Sam). We have always been very close, and I really do value the relationships I have with them. I have two large families, one in Australia and one here in Aotearoa (New Zealand). I have been lucky enough to spend a fair amount of time in Australia with my cousins.

Learning Never Ends

In 2017 I completed my Bachelor of Teaching (Endorsed in Primary Education) at Otago University in Dunedin (NZ). I have always enjoyed working with children, and for me teaching was a great option. I have learnt so much about working with youth over the last three years. One of the best things about teaching has been seeing the sparkle in kids eyes when they understand or learn something new. I hope that I can bring the fun and wonder from Augusta into my future classrooms!

Never a Dull Moment

What do I do with my free time? Anything and everything! I love getting outside and being active. You would commonly find me hiking trails and exploring local areas with friends. My favorite activity in the world is skiing. I used to dislike it as a child, but my parents had me go with them every year. Somewhere along the line something clicked, and now I can’t get enough! During the summer months surfing, swimming, and beach hopping are some of my favourite things to do. Although I sometimes do these things by myself, I believe the more the merrier! And I’ll often take my friends along for the ride. Although I enjoy being active with others, I also enjoy some downtime. Whether it’s reading a book, watching a movie, drawing, napping, or playing a few games, I enjoy chilling out and relaxing too.

E Noho Rā/ Goodbye!

There is so much I could tell you about myself, but I think we’d better save some of it for camp! Be well, and hopefully I will meet you soon amongst the trees of Augusta!

This is a Māori Karakia (A prayer from New Zealand’s indigenous people) which I believe is relevant to camp life.

E te whānau (hui)

Whāia te mātauranga kia mārama

Kia whai take ngā mahi katoa

Tū māia, tū kaha

Aroha atu, aroha mai

Tātou i a tātou katoa.

For this family (gathering)

Seek knowledge for understanding

Have purpose in all that you do

Stand tall, be strong

Let us show respect

For each other.
